About Us

Basic Needs Food Market is a free, walk-in, choice-based market providing barrier-free access to food in a welcoming, dignity-centered environment. Shoppers choose foods that fit their needs, including fresh produce, dairy, grocery staples, personal care items, and culturally relevant options such as halal-certified meats. There are no income or residency requirements, and registration is available in seven languages.

Opened in Cottage Grove in September 2023, the volunteer-led Market serves an average of 300 households each weekday. In 2025, Basic Needs distributed more than 1 million pounds of food and hygiene products in South Washington County, rescued over 510,000 pounds of food from schools and regional partners, and served nearly 200,000 adults, children, and seniors.
